Creating High Availability Media Agents in CommVault with GridStor®

When you create a storage policy, a media agent with associated storage is selected as part of the policy.  Without further care, if the media agent goes offline, the backups will fail.  However, using the GridStor® features of Simpana, alternate data paths can be configured if the media agent goes offline or if the storage becomes unavailable allowing for your backups to continue after a failure.

When you create a storage policy, you select a default data path for their backups.  If you have a 2nd Media agent in your CommVault environment, you can define an alternate data path.  When creating alternate data paths, you have two options.  The first is use alternate data paths when the resources are offline.  This will allow the alternate data path to be used when the media agent is offline or unavailable in some way, like a network outage.  The second option is to use alternate data paths when resources are busy. This will allow the alternate data path to be used when the media agent is out of space or is in use with another job.  Multiple alternate paths can be selected to further protect your backup jobs.
